4-(Bromomethyl)benzaldehyde is a kind of colorless to light yellow crystal. It is insouble in water, but it is souble in alcohol and ether. 4-(Bromomethyl)benzaldehyde is most commonly served as intermediates of medicine and pesticides.
Synthesis of 4-bromomethyl benzaldehyde:  A solution of 0.05 moles of diisobutyl aluminium hydride is dropwise added to a flask containing 0.05 moles of 1-(bromo) toluenitrile in 100 ml of benzene at 0° C. The reaction mixture is stirred overnight under nitrogen atmosphere. The reaction is terminated by pouring the entire reaction mixture into dil.HCl in an icebath. 4-(Bromomethyl)benzaldehyde is isolated by solvent extraction with solvent ether. The ether layer is dried over anhyd. MgSO4 and the ether layer was concentrated under reduced pressure. The product is recovered by precipitation in pentane. The product is purified by recrystallization from pentane. The yield of 4-bromomethyl benzaldehyde is 70%.
