The pharmacological  activity  of Ruscus aculeatus L. is attributed tosteroid saponins, and their aglycones, mainly ruscogenin and neoruscogenin, which have venoconstricting and antinfammatory effect. The active compounds have been found to enhance venous circulation by promoting muscle contractions with a mechanism involving post junctional a-adrenergic receptors.

Ruscogenin, first isolated from  Ruscusaculeatus, has been reported to exert significant antiinflammatory activities. It acts as an anti-elastase, decreases capillary permeability, and is widely used to
treat chronic venous insufficiency and vasculitis in Europe for more than 40 years. In addition, ruscogenin is also a major steroidal sapogenin of Radix Ophiopogon japonicus, a Chinese herb that has been
used to treat acute and chronic inflammatory and cardiovascular diseases for thousands of years. The related
pharmacological studies have been confirmed activities of the ethanol extract from  Ophiopogon japonicus or ruscogenin glycoside in various aspects such as antiarrhythmia, anti-ischaemia, anti-thrombosis.
