Aluminum fluoride is a white needle crystal or powder. It is decomposed into Al2O3 by vapour at high temperature, and with HF being released. Aluminum fluoride is an important additive during electrolytic aluminum production. It can reduce aluminum’s melting point and increase electrolyte’s conductivity. It can also be used for conductance fluctuation ingredient, cryogenic glaze, enamel and ceramic resister.
Molecularformula: AlF3CAS No.:7784-18-1

The majority of aluminium fluoride is mainly produced by treating alumina with hexafluorosilicic acid:
H2SiF6 + Al2O3 → 2 AlF3 + SiO2 + H2O
Alternatively, it is manufactured by thermal decomposition of ammonium hexafluoroaluminate. For small scale laboratory preparations, AlF3 can also be prepared by treating aluminium hydroxide or aluminium metal with HF.
Aluminium fluoride trihydrate is found in nature as the rare mineral rosenbergite.
