Bifidobacterium bifidum is one member of the Bifidobacterium family that is believed to be strictly of human origin. There are others of this family that are strictly of animal origin and still others that can be found in both human and animal.
Although Bifidobacterium bifidum is not one of the largest numbered of the Bifidobacterium family to be found in adult humans (it makes up around 2% of the Bifidobacterium1) it is believed to somehow have a clear ecological advantage in adults1.
