C16 Alcohol is a white flaky crystal. It is easily soluble in benzene, ether and chloroform. It is soluble in acetone, and lightly soluble in alcohol, but insoluble in water. It is inflammable, irritating and harmful to environment. It is also used in perfume, cosmetics, detergent, and plasticizers. In addition, it is used as cream base in medicines.

The name cetyl derives from the whale oil (Latin: cetus) from which it was first isolated.
