Cremophor is the brand name for a range of non-ionic polyethoxylated detergents. It was developed for use as solubilizers and emulsifiers for oral, topical and parenteral preparations. Cremophor RH 40 is a solubilizer for fat-soluble vitamins, essential oils andother hydrophobic pharmaceuticals. Particular features are that it has verylittle odour and in aqueous solutions is almost tasteless.
Cremophor RH40 is also known as polyoxyethylene hydrogenated castor oil, or hydrogenated castor oil polyoxyethylene ester 40. It is a white to pale yellow paste with almost no odour. It is a general purpose solubiliser for essential oils, perfumery synthetics, fat soluble vitamins and other hydrophobic substances. Cremophor RH40 is often used as a solvent and emulsifier for the water-insoluble drugs or other fat-soluble drugs.It is used in semi-solid and liquid formulations. Cremophor RH 40 is also used to solubilize vitamins, water insoluble active substances and essential oils in water or mixtures of water and alcohol and to improve bioavailability in solid dosage forms.
